Would you change?

In 1991 the Noble Prize for Science was awarded for the mapping of the human genome. That is basically a map of DNA. In the 20 years since they have refined it and made it more detailed. They have isolated the genes that cause all kinds of diseases and conditions.

This test has been available to the public for a while but is incredibly expensive. One use of this is when women are tested for the BRACA which will show if you carry the the gene for breast cancer.

The news this morning is that by the end of the year they expect people to be able to have the whole reading for 1,000.00.

Now I personally don't want to know. I will deal with whatever the Lord gives me WHEN or IF it comes.

I wonder though... if you knew would it REALLY change how you live your life?

Think about it ... we already KNOW for a fact that being overweight increases your chances of a myriad of things and smoking is known to cause lung cancer and emphysema, yet we are the heaviest we have ever been as a nation! The smokers still smoke... despite the not only the health issues but the cost.

We already KNOW we are prone to these things and yet we are unwilling to change our lives to lessen the chances.

So really knowing this... if they found the gene for cancer in your make up is that really any different than knowing you are already at risk just by doing it? If they find the gene for heart disease will you REALLY give up the foods that put you at risk, which are mostly the SAME foods that make people obese.

I suppose there are people that would know and fight it will all they have, but they are few.

I wish I knew why we are this way... why even knowing the consequences we still do it! Maybe we think it will never happen to US.

I think I will just live today, make the best choices I can and then fight my battles as the come.
